The BUFC Game Time Guide: Our Philosophy on Minutes Played
As a parent, I know the weekend drill all too well. You wake up early on a Sunday, pack the snacks, fill the water bottles, and drive 45 minutes to an away fixture, only to stand on the sidelines and watch your child sit on the bench for most of the game.
It is incredibly frustrating for you, and it is disheartening for them.
I have been exactly where you are. I once drove all the way to Johannesburg for a tournament, only to watch my son play a combined total of just 30 minutes across a 7-match fixture list. It was a massive expense and a huge investment of time and enthusiasm, only to be left frustrated and extremely saddened. Even at a purely developmental age of football like Under 11, winning matches was prioritized over giving players a fair amount of time to participate, have fun, and get a chance to develop.
That is exactly what happens when coaching egos and a “win-at-all-costs” mentality override the emotional wellbeing of children and their families. This is not what Ballito United is about.
At the same time, we do recognize that losing too often, or losing badly, is also detrimental to the confidence and wellbeing of our children. Finding that perfect balance means we must think incredibly carefully about how we manage each junior player’s match time. We also understand that parents of players who are currently performing as the “stronger” members of a squad may feel disappointed or confused when their child is benched to give others a run.
For all of these reasons, we want to be completely transparent about our club’s policy on game time, how it differs between our squads, and exactly what you can expect when you show up on matchday.
Younger age groups & the “Beats” squads: The 50% rule
For our foundational age groups and all of our Beats (‘B’) teams, our policy is incredibly strict: every single player must play at least half of the match, regardless of the scoreline.
Here is why we enforce this:
- Development over results:
A player cannot develop their skills, game intelligence, or confidence sitting on the bench. We won’t keep our strongest players on the pitch for the full game just to secure a Sunday league win. - Long-term squad health:
Giving every player significant game time ensures our entire squad gains valuable match experience which will lead to a long-term deeper squad depth that makes for a far stronger team. - Respecting your time:
We deeply value the effort you put into bringing your children to training and matches. It is simply not fair to ask you to travel across Durban for your child to only play the final five minutes.
Our coaches have been explicitly instructed on this policy.
If you notice that your child in a younger age group or a Beats team is consistently not getting their fair share of game time, please reach out to BUFC Management immediately. We will address it.
The competitive age groups & the “Hearts” squads
As players move into the older, highly competitive age groups and our Hearts (‘A’) squads, the approach to game time does shift.
In these specific environments, game time allocation is not guaranteed to be exactly equal. Our coaches must manage minutes based on tactical necessities, player combinations, and the specific demands of that particular match.
However, even in our most competitive Hearts teams, our core values remain. Our coaches are instructed to ensure that substitutes are given a fair and meaningful run on the pitch. We do not believe in bringing a child to a match just to make up the numbers. If they are in the matchday squad, they are there to contribute.
The Bigger Picture
Whether your child is playing every single minute in the Hearts squad or getting their guaranteed half-match in the Beats, our ultimate goal remains the same: we want them to fall in love with football, build their character, and leave the pitch with a smile on their face.
Thank you for your weekend drives, your sideline cheers, and your trust in the BUFC process.
1 heart, 1 beat, LET’S PLAY! 💙🖤
